Cholera Outbreak: Medical Women Association on Way Out

The Edo State chapter of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has alerted residents of the state of the outbreak of cholera.

In a statement signed by Dr Irene Irenosen Akhideno, president, MWAN, Edo State; Dr. Henrietta Ugbeni, P. R. O. MWAN, Edo State and Dr O.E. Obarisiagbon, an
Associate Professor/Consultant in the Department of Public Health&Community Medicine,
University of Benin and University of Benin Teaching Hospital, made available to newsmen in Benin City noted that, “Cholera is caused by consuming food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person, poor hygiene, poor environmental sanitation, and inadequate access to clean water”.

The statement also listed the symptoms as, “Diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and abdominal cramps”.

On prevention of the disease which is infectious, the statement urged the people to, “Drink clean potable water,
wash hands frequently with soap and water; keep the environment clean and hygienic, avoid close contact with cholera patients, cook food thoroughly and store properly”.

On safe practices to prevent the outbreak of the disease, the medical women admonished the people to, “Boil water before drinking, use water filters or purifiers, wash hands with soap or ash and water before preparing food, eating, and after using the toilet, keep surroundings clean and hygienic, dispose off waste properly and use toilets and latrines properly”.

While pointing out that cholera is preventable and treatable, the statement urged patients to, “Drink Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to replace fluids, seek medical attention at the hospital for fluid and electrolyte replacement, antibiotics, rest, and hydration”.
