Addressing the Physical and Mental Effects of Rape of a Minor: MWAN Edo’s Commitment to Comprehensive Care and Justice

Being text of press statement by Dr. Irene Akhideno, President, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Edo State chapter condemning the spate of rape of minors.

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Edo Chapter is deeply concerned about the alarming rise in cases of rape involving minors. The physical and mental effects of such traumatic experiences are profound and long-lasting, necessitating immediate and comprehensive intervention.

Physical Effects of Rape on Minors

Rape can result in severe physical trauma, including injuries, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unwanted pregnancies. These physical consequences can have lasting impacts on the victim’s health and well-being.

Mental Effects of Rape on Minors

The psychological impact of rape is equally devastating. Victims often suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. The trauma can lead to long-term emotional and behavioral problems, affecting the victim’s ability to live a normal life.

MWAN Edo’s Response

-Medical Care: Immediate medical attention to address physical injuries and prevent STIs.
