The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has honoured Comrade Evangelist Francis Akhigbe, the First Member and Member representing Edo Central Senatorial District in the Edo State Local Government Service Commission with the Award of Outstanding Service in Local Government in Edo State, in recognition of his contributions to grassroots development and public service.
The award was presented at the 2026 Edo NUJ Classique Dinner in Benin City, on Saturday, 14 February where media professionals, political leaders, and community stakeholders gathered to dine, wine, unwind and celebrate individuals who have made measurable impact in the state.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Edo State Council of NUJ, Dr. Festus Alenkhe said Akhigbe was selected for the award in recognition of his commitment to transparency, community-driven projects, and consistent engagement with the grassroots. According to the union chairman, his work in strengthening local governance structures and promoting accountability distinguished him among his peers.
“Akhigbe has demonstrated that local government remains the closest arm of government to the people. His efforts reflect dedication to service and development,” the NUJ chairman said during the presentation.
Receiving the award, Akhigbe expressed gratitude to the NUJ for what he described as a rare honour, noting that being a journalist himself the award has defiled the saying that a prophet is not honoured at home.
He dedicated the award to his political leader, Comrade Sylvester Aigboboh, the Deputy State Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for believing in his capacity and ability to deliver in public service, acknowledging his guidance and political mentorship.
“I dedicate this award to my political leader, Comrade Sylvester Aigboboh, whose leadership and counsel have shaped my journey in public service. His belief in my ability and capacity in public service and grassroots development continues to inspire me.”
“This recognition belongs to the people who believed in our vision and worked tirelessly to make it a reality. Service at the grassroots is a collective responsibility, and I am proud of what we have achieved together.”
Observers at the event noted that the honour underscores the growing attention on effective local governance in Edo State which Akhigbe represents, especially during the short period he acted as Chairman of the Commission.
Other awardees at the well attended dinner party were the General Manager of Edo Broadcasting Service, Mr. Sulaiman Aledeh, Senator Daisy Ehanire-Danjuma, Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole; Edo State Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Acting Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Engr. Gabriel Iduseri, Federal Commissioner representing Edo State at Federal Civil Service Commission, Henry Idshagbon, among others.
Comrade Evangelist Francis Akhigbe, a journalist, senior member of the NUJ and the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) was appointed the member representing Edo Central Senatorial District and First Member in the Edo State Local Government Service Commission by the focused Governor of Edo State, Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo.
He was made the Acting Chairman of the Commission by virtue of being the First Member of the Commission following the suspension of the substantive Chairman for alleged financial infraction. During the six months he acted as Chairman he distinguished himself and gave a good account of his stewardship.
In recognition of his honest and diligent stewardship, sincerity of purpose, several organisations decided to honour with Award of Excellence in Good Governance. These include the Bendel Times Award of Excellence in Good Governance, by Bendel Times Newspapers; Award of Excellence in Good Governance by Esan Youth For Good Governance and Social Justice, Ambassador of Peace Award by the Universal Peace Federation amongst others.
