A Benin based medical practitioner and human rights activist, Dr. Bright Oniovokukor has called on Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo to speak out and declare his stand on the raging crisis rocking Local Government Councils in the state which has degenerated into violence in some areas.
Oniovokukor who is also the Executive Director of Indomitable Youth Organisation, made the call in Benin City in a statement he personally signed, and urged the Governor to make his involvement in the saga public and ensure that the Supreme Court judgement on Local Government autonomy of 11 July, interpreting Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended are implemented in the state.
“The LG Council crisis in Edo State is indeed escalating, with reports of harassment, intimidation, and violence in the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs). It’s unacceptable for politics to resort to force and harassment, especially when there are constitutional processes in place to address grievances.
“The Governor of Edo State needs to declare his level of involvement in the crisis. It’s essential for him to publicly address the situation and take concrete steps to resolve it. The House of Assembly, with its constitutional powers, must also take responsibility and ensure that the processes enshrined in the Constitution are followed.
“The Supreme Court judgment of July 11, 2024, has interpreted Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution, granting autonomy to the 774 Local Governments in Nigeria, including the 18 LGAs in Edo State. This judgment should be respected and implemented.
“Instead of the current approach, which is being seen as a demonstration of failed lobbying skills, it’s crucial for the Governor and the Speaker to work together to find a solution. Dissolving the LGA and contending with higher powers might be a more effective approach.
“The people of Edo State deserve better, and it’s time for the authorities to take decisive action to restore peace and order in the LGAs. Enough is indeed enough”.
