The Edo State government has restated it’s commitment to the total upbringing of Edo children, assuring that it will continue to address paramount issues that directly impact the future of the society as the children are the future of the state.
The Commissioner for Social Development and Gender Issues, Hon. (Mrs) Christabel Omo-Ekwu stated this at a press briefing on preparations for the 2024 Children’s Day celebration in Benin City on Friday, 24 May.
While stating that the theme of this year’s celebration is “Enhancing the total wellbeing of our children”, Hon. Omo-Ekwu pointed out that Edo State government has priotised the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of Edo children.
“Our children are not just the future but also the present, and it is crucial that we equip them with the tools and resources needed to thrive in today’s world. The well-being of Edo children is not only a priority but a collective responsibility that requires a multi-faceted approach involving families, guardians, schools, communities, and policymakers.
“Children are the future of our society, and it is crucial that we provide them with the necessary support to thrive physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and socially”.
While enumerating the various strategies the Edo State government have initiated to promote the wellbeing of Edo children, Commissioner Omo-Ekwu thanked the Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC) programme for their support in the inauguration of the Local Government Child Rights Implementation Committees (LGCRIC) which she noted will further enhance the protection and welfare of Edo children.
The Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC) a programme being implemented by International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance International (IDEA) and funded by the European Union.
“Today, we are here to highlight the various strategies and initiatives aimed at promoting the holistic well-being of our children, Edo children and our future.
“Education and Awareness: Education plays a vital role in promoting well-being among children, in Edo state, the administration of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Edo state Mr. Godwin N. Obaseki recognize that Education is the cornerstone of a child’s growth. We are dedicated to providing quality education that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and essential life skills to empower children to reach their full potential. Edo state government prioritize this all important aspect of the Edo child’s wellbeing with visible and proven achievement through the EdoBEST program that have attracted admirations locally and internationally; we have a good story to tell. The EdoBEST PROGRAM have continue to focus on promoting emotional intelligence, resilience, and life skills in our educational curriculum that empower children to thrive academically, build healthy relationships and be their best at all times.
“Mental Health Support: One of the key aspects of enhancing the total well-being of our children is prioritizing their mental health. We are aware of the present economic realities of our dear nation, We recognize the importance of providing access to mental health resources, counseling services, and support systems to help children navigate challenges they face, we recognize the importance of mental health in overall well-being and we are committed to providing access to mental health resources and port services for children facing emotional challenges or psychological distress.
“Safety and Protection; Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment. We are committed to safeguarding children from harm, abuse, and violence, and ensuring that they feel secure in their homes, schools, and communities, this is made possible through Community Engagement: Building strong community ties is essential for supporting our children’s well-being. We encourage community involvement in creating a supportive network that fosters positive relationships, mentorship, and social connections for our children; to further strengthen our community engagement, early this week, the Ministry of social development and gender Issues in Collaboration with RoLAC inaugurate the Local government Child’s Right Implementation committee. As we move forward in our efforts to enhance the total well-being of our children, we call upon parents, educators, policymakers, healthcare providers, and the wider community to join hands in this shared mission. Together, we can create a nurturing environment where every child can flourish and fulfill their potential. Thank you for your attention. On activities lined up for the celebration, Hon. Omo-Ekwu pointed out that the Ministry of Education is organising activities for the children at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Monday, 27 May, adding that the Ministry of Health will also use the occasion to carry out awareness campaign on cervical cancer.
