The Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City has announced the funeral arrangements for its Archbishop, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, with the rites scheduled to begin on August 12.
The announcement which was contained in a statement dated July 28, 2026, and signed by the Chancellor of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Oyanoafoh, stated that he was conveying the directives of the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese, Most Rev. Donatus A. Ogun.
According to the statement, a Vigil Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Mission Road, Benin City, beginning at 5 p.m.
The Funeral Mass is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, 2026, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City, at 10 a.m.
The Archdiocese also called on the faithful to continue offering prayers for the late prelate as preparations for the funeral continue.
“As we prepare for his funeral, let us continue to pray for the repose of his soul,” the statement added.
Archbishop Akubeze, who served as Archbishop of Benin City and was widely respected for his pastoral leadership and commitment to the Catholic faith, is expected to be laid to rest following the Funeral Mass.
