Josemaria Escriva Foundation Urges Govt to Tackle Poverty With Concrete Steps

The Josemaria Escriva Foundation (JOSEF) has called on governments at the various levels to put concrete measures in place to tackle poverty in Nigeria, just s it noted that palliative measures as currently being practiced will not reduce poverty and its attendant consequences.

The foundation made the call in statement signed by its Programme Officer, Festus Anelu to mark the 2024 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and made available to newsmen.

Anelu who pointed out that the observance of this year’s
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty With the theme, “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment, Acting Together for Just, Peaceful and Inclusive Societies”, underscores JOSEF’s commitment to the eradication in the world.

“We call on government at all levels to put in place sustainable action plans that can impact positively on Nigerians. Half measures like the current palliatives has not in any way reduced the suffering of Nigerians. As a nation with a lot of resources, we have no reason why people should be unjustly treated and deprived of social benefits that should ordinarily not be. Together let us work for a just, peaceful and inclusive societies.

“The aim is to raise awareness and promote actions against poverty, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by collaborating with governments and NGOs to influence policy changes, and emphasizing the value of work as a means to overcome poverty.

“Also, JOSEF ‘s observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty reflects its commitment to addressing this global issue, guided by the principles of solidarity, personal responsibility and the dignity of work”.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17 to raise awareness on the plight of those living with poverty and proffer solutions on how best to eradicate poverty.
