…inspects Eguare, Irrua markets, assesses facilities, traders’ needs
The Chairman of Esan Central Local Government Council, Hon. Prince Abdullahi Momodu, has expressed displeasure over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse around markets in Irrua, directing the Environmental and Health Department of the council to take immediate action to address the situation.
Momodu gave the directive on Tuesday, September 15, during his inspection of the Irrua Market and the lock-up stores at Eguare Market, as part of efforts to assess the condition of public facilities and engage traders and other stakeholders in the area.
Reacting to the sanitary condition of the markets, the Chairman frowned at the indiscriminate disposal of refuse, stressing the need for appropriate measures to maintain a clean and healthy environment around the markets.
The inspection also afforded the Chairman the opportunity to assess the condition and utilisation of the lock-up stores at Eguare Market. He subsequently toured the new market structures currently under construction, a project of the Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
At Irrua Market, Momodu inspected various sections of the facility and interacted with traders and other stakeholders, while assessing the state of infrastructure and the general conditions under which commercial activities are conducted.
Speaking with journalists after the inspection, Momodu said, “like you can see, our governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has set the standard for me and others to follow”.
He added, “the local government is the closest to the people, and we have no choice but to continue to deliver the dividends of democracy, in line with the SHINE Agenda of our governor”.
On the ongoing construction at Eguare Market, the Chairman said, “Our governor’s project, the new structures in Eguare Market, when completed, will go a long way in not only adding value to the market, it will also ease congestion in the market”.
Momodu, who stressed the importance of functional and conducive markets to the economic wellbeing of residents, noted that markets remain vital centres of commerce and important sources of livelihood for thousands of people in the local government area.
He assured traders and other market stakeholders that his administration would give appropriate attention to issues affecting their businesses and work towards improving the condition of market facilities within the limits of available resources.
The inspection tour is regarded as an early indication of the administration’s commitment to on-the-spot assessment of existing infrastructure, environmental conditions and direct engagement with residents and stakeholders across Esan Central Local Government Area.
The Chairman was accompanied on the inspection by the Vice Chairman of the local government, Hon. Engr. Health Izokpu; the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Theophilus Oseigba; the Special Adviser to the Local Government, Hon. Jude Ohue; among others.
